We-Ko-Pa Golf Course: Cholla- Fort McDowell, AZ
As some who dislikes houses along fairways, the two courses at We-Ko-Pa (yavapai for “four peaks”) are my favorites in the Valley. Here, the only distractions are the stunning Supersition mountains and a few javalinas.
Designed by Scott Miller in 2001, Cholla was We-Ko-Pa’s first course. Carved out of the Sonoran desert, with sweeping vistas, it’s an absolutely breathtaking track. It is also desert target golf, so you may lose a few balls. Considered by some to be the more difficult of the two courses, it may not be the best round of your golf trip, but it may well be the most fun.
Practical Note- they are serious when they suggest calling about frost delays. It is far cooler out there than it is in Scottsdale, and frost delays are common in the winter months. Bring extra layers, or be prepared to visit the pro shop before your round.
