Untersberg- Salzburg, Austria

Sometimes you feel like you are on top of the world, and sometimes you actually are. The Alps are soaring and majestic, and a trip to the top is something you will never forget. A short drive outside of Salzburg, Untersberg soars over quaint towns and picturesque farms. A closer look at the mountain reveals movement, and a glint of metal; a cable car rises from the valley below, transporting eager hikers to the peak 1320 meters above.

Since 1961 the Untersbergbahn has been zipping up the mountain at a swift 7 m/s, terrifying those with even a vague fear of heights. With as much as 286 meters between you and the ground, a free hanging span of 1.5 kilometers, and up to a 79% incline, the ride is not for the faint of heart. It is wonderfully thrilling, and clearly much easier than hiking to the top. 20150829_112040

In only 9 minutes, you find yourself in a different world. The weather can vary greatly from the valley below, and there is little relief from the sun above. There are several hikes available for those not content to just ride the cable car; in winter there is skiing. There are also a couple restaurants if you are exercise adverse.

Several peaks are adorned with crosses, which deceptively look much closer than they actually are. Or maybe it just feels that way. Although some attempt these hikes in flip flops, unless you have a death wish, stick to hiking boots, or at least tennis shoes. There are many areas of slick rock, and loose gravel. Along the trail several vistas greet you, looking down upon secluded farms and valleys. It will absolutely conjure images of The Sound of Music, which was filmed in this area.

From the top is a vast 360 degree view of the surrounding peaks (Hoher Goll and Mt. Watzmann) and countryside below. On a clear day, you can see over to Germany. While you might be tempted to remain at the peak, there is a restaurant below that has a fabulous grapefruit beer that you will not want to miss.

Absolutely linger on the restaurant patio for at least a couple beers before making the journey back down the mountain; you’d be hard press to find a more impressive cafe view, and the people watching is excellent. If you are so inclined, you can hike down the mountain, but it will surely take you more than the cable car’s 9 minutes, and a bit more effort.
