The Boulders- Carefree, AZ

Ah, The Boulders. Everything a resort should be. It has amazing scenery, a fancy spa, hiking trails, plenty of pools, updated rooms and two stunning golf courses.  Throw in their tequila bar and proximity to Cave Creek, and you have an all around winner. 

The property is vast, and the casitas are very spread out, so make sure you reference a property map when you pick your room. The casitas themselves have just been refreshed, so everything is shiny and new. Each unit has a wood burning fireplace that not only provides warmth on cold desert evenings, but perfumes the air with the scent of juniper wood.

Hands down, the golf courses at The Boulders are two of the best courses in the Scottsdale area. Although challenging, both are fun, in immaculate condition, and are stunningly scenic. You will absolutely end up with pictures of every hole. While both courses are winners, if you can only play one, go with the South Course. It is a bit newer, has more elevated tee boxes, and more memorable holes.

The Boulders is also very convenient to other area golf courses that should not be missed. First and foremost, We-Ko-Pa. On Native American land, there is not a house to be found. Just stunning desert golf. You would be hard pressed to find a course in better condition. This course can be pricey, but it is worth it in every way.

The Boulder’s onsite Mexican restaurant, the Spotted Donkey, is also not to be missed. You can build your own fancy tequila flights, and you will be thankful you are only a walk away from your room (albeit probably not a short one). There is also a gratis shuttle should you need it, and a no tipping policy, so for once you do actually get something other than free WiFi for your resort fee. You are also only a few miles from Cave Creek, so your dining options are pretty open. Tonto Bar & Grill was outstanding.

As far as winter retreats go, The Boulders is hard to beat. Summer might be a bit toasty/hellish, but there are great deals to be had if you can handle it…they do have all those pools!
