Tenorio Volcano National Park- Guatuso, Costa Rica
March 8, 2024/
Located about an hour and a half from La Fortuna, Tenorio Volcano National Park offers an all around excellent rain forest experience. Featuring a relatively easy hike, it packs a huge scenery punch, including the unbelievably beautiful Rio Celeste waterfall.
Although it’s tempting to stop at one of several attractions along the trail, continue to the end, where two streams merge, and escaping volcanic minerals turn the Rio Celeste River a shocking blue (Los Teñideros).
After you’ve seen the source, double back and check out escaping sulfur at the Borbollones, the serene Blue Lagoon, and finally the Rio Celeste Catarata. Considering the steep switchback stairs that lead to the waterfall, you’ll be glad your hike is almost over.
For the best experience, hire a local guide to accompany you on your hike. They will make the required reservations in advance (entry limited to 1200 people per day), and provide invaluable rain forest identification assistance on the trail.
