Tapatio Springs Golf Course- Boerne, TX
All hail King George! Truly, George Straight can do no wrong. In addition to having the most number number one hits in country music history, and being an all around good guy, George is part owner of Tapatio Springs, an obscenely beautiful Texas Hill Country golf course. And while the clubhouse recently burned to the ground, the newly renovated golf course was unscathed, and will reopen for business in 2018. And when it does, you should go. Situated just outside the impossibly cute town of Boerne, this course is an easy drive from San Antonio or Austin. Located in arguably the most beautiful region of Texas, this championship course recently…

Big Bend National Park- Big Bend, TX
For all of you National Park junkies that love the isolation and solitude of the desert, head to Big Bend. It is by far one of the least visited National Parks in the United States, so chances are you will practically have the place to yourself. Although some might consider it desolate, the park is far from a barren wasteland; it is home to stunning geology, the Rio Grande, diverse wildlife, and some of the darkest skies in the world. Big Bend is not the easiest place to get to, which probably accounts for the low visitation numbers. Only 300,000 people a year visit this park, which is probably the…

King Ranch- Kingsville, TX
All hat and no cattle certainly does not apply to King Ranch. With 35,000 cattle and over 200 Quarter Horses, it is one of the largest ranches in world. At 825,000 acres, it is larger than the State of Rhode Island. Founded in 1853, it is a living reminder of the Wild West; wonderfully historic, it is a true throwback to the days of cowboys and cattle drives. Though still a thriving concern, the ranch itself is very much a reflection of the past. Founder Richard King lived a very interesting life. Born in New York City to poor Irish immigrants in 1824, he was indentured to a jeweler at…

Rockport Beach- Rockport, TX
There is nothing quite like a day at the beach. The surf, the sand…the birds! While there are countless options along the Gulf of Mexico, the sheltered shores along Aransas Bay are some of the best beaches around for bird watching. If you are lucky enough to be there in the winter you might even spot a Whooping Crane; the ridiculously rare birds spend the summer in the far reaches of Northwest Canada, then migrate 2500 miles to the Aransas Wildlife refuge for the winter. Even if you don’t see a Whooper, there are a wide variety of other birds that make this area home. With a wide sandy beach,…

La Cantera Resort Course- San Antonio, TX
Former home of the Valero Open, the Resort Course at La Contera is slightly overshadowed by the Palmer Course these days. Or maybe that is just my opinion, because I really loved the Palmer Course. The Resort course certainly has its fans, and there is no denying it is the easier of the two courses. Sometimes you want that. There is also no denying that it has one of the most visual interesting holes out there. If you are looking for an elevated tee box that looks down upon a roller coaster, then look no further; hole 7 of this Morrish/Weiskoff design delivers stunning views of a 1934 limestone quarry…
