    Portland Architecture Gallery

Portland’s architecture is an interesting mix of styles, with something new seemingly built every day. Historically a fairly low built city, it will be interesting to see how the skyline changes over the next few years, given the city’s astronomical growth. Home to several iconic buildings, including the French Renaissance Pittock Mansion in the West Hills, and the Beaux Arts Jackson Tower in Pioneer Square, it’s a town I look forward to exploring further in the future.

  • Vineyards & Wine

    Ponzi Vineyards- Sherwood, OR

It is my firm belief that Willamette Valley produces the best Pinot Noir in the United States. Not that I don’t have a lot of love for California, but my wine loyalty lies further north. Almost all of my favorite wineries are located scattered across various AVAs in this small corner of the world; while I would be hard pressed to pick an absolute favorite, my short list would absolutely include Ponzi. It is a wine I am always excited to see on a menu, and its tasting room did not disappoint. Surprisingly modern, their tasting room perfectly complements their wines. Concrete and wood works well with nearly floor to…

    Multnomah Falls- Bridal Veil, OR

Multnomah Falls may just be the second most iconic waterfall in the United States, behind only Niagara. It’s dramatic drop, lush landscape, and delicate arch bridge certainly make for an impressive photo. Unbelievably beautiful, it is no wonder it is the most popular natural attraction in Oregon. Which also means it is unbelievably crowded. However, if you visit very early, you will miss most of the madness. Also, a significant number of visitors just jump out to snap a stunning shot, so the actual hike to the upper falls overlook was downright peaceful in the early morning. Along the way, the views of the Columbia River rival those of the…

    The Benson Hotel- Portland, OR

Grand and stately. The Benson is just one of those historic hotels that feels serious. Surely due in no small part to all that magnificent wood paneling in the lobby, which brings to mind banks and courtrooms. It is however in no way stuffy; it is a wonderfully preserved piece of the past, and the perfect place to stay in PDX. Built by pioneer lumberman Simon Benson in 1913 at a cost of $1 million dollars, the Benson has always been fancy pants. Conceived as a high end establishment, no expense was spared during the construction. Designed by architect A.E. Doyle, and modeled after Chicago’s famous Blackstone Hotel, it was…

    Bandon Coastline- Bandon, OR

Oregon absolutely has one of the most dramatic coastlines in the United States. Sandy beaches give way to sea stacks and spires, ancient giants emerging from the surf. Driving the Oregon coastline should be on everyone’s roadtrip shortlist. Bandon is known primarily for being a difficult to reach golf destination, that is worth the journey. Which is unequivocally true. However, if you make the trek, you will also be rewarded with stunning scenery. Just outside of the town of Bandon itself, there are two scenic areas that offer excellent vistas. At the end of 8th Street, there is a small parking area that leads to a boardwalk. This will take…
