Red Rock Canyon NCA, Las Vegas, NV
I’ve already touched on the amazing geology found over at Valley of Fire, but if you need a nature fix a bit closer to Sin City, you’re in luck. A very short drive from The Strip is Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, and you definitely should not miss it when in Vegas. For hikers, there are a wide variety of trails; for those who were over served the night before, there is a scenic driving loop. The dramatic red outcroppings can be seen from almost every window in town, but to truly appreciate the dramatic rock formations you must visit the park. Red Rock Canyon is located only 20…

Joshua Tree National Park- Joshua Tree, CA
Summer is prime time for road trips, and among the most popular destinations are our National Parks. The well known big hitters get the lion’s share of traffic; Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon see tens of thousands of tourists a day. Over 900,000 people visited Yellowstone in July alone last year. Which is madness. But there are always options, such as visiting off season, or choosing a less popular park. Joshua Tree is a perfect example, and a perfect park for desert fans. Even during its busiest month, Joshua Tree is much quieter than some other parks. If you are hell bent on a summer park vacation, you could…

Shete Boka National Park- Boka Tabla, Curacao
Off the coast of Venezuela sits the lovely desert island of Curacao. First colonized by the Dutch in 1634, the island’s sheltered natural deep water harbor proved ideal for trade. As the colony flourished, grand colonial buildings were erected around the capital of Willemstad; though distinctly Dutch, local design elements were added, resulting in an architectural style known as Curacao Baroque. Many of these pastel painted buildings remain, and in 1997 the area became an UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a beautiful city, that should be explored; but for those who are interested in the more distant past, head over to the island’s north shore. The island itself dates…

Arches National Park- Moab, UT
Most National Parks are ridiculously crowded in the summer. Hikes seem more like death marches, as the volume of visitors surpasses most trail capacities. However, desert parks are decidedly quiet this time of year. Yes, they are hot. Yes, they are unforgiving. But for those willing to set out at dawn, you will be rewarded with an intimate experience, almost impossible at more hospitable times of the year. Arches National Park is a perfect example; late August finds this wonderland almost abandoned. Just remember sunscreen, long sleeves, and plenty of water, or you’ll never live to post your pictures.

Jackson Hole, WY
Wyoming is a wonderland. So much to do, so much to see, so much open space. The town of Jackson retains a rustic Old West vibe, while Jackson Hole’s Teton Village is its more sophisticated sibling of sorts. While the area is known for its skiing, late summer is a magnificent time to visit and explore the mountain sans snow, or at least significantly less of it. Mere miles from Grand Teton National Park, your outdoor adventures are only limited by your ability. Which you absolutely should be honest with yourself about; there are some serious hikes out there, but also alternatives for the less athletic.
