Travelling via Interstate 84 to Massachusetts from Ohio became a regular event for me in 2020 and 2021. That route introduced me to the Poconos, the magnificent Settler's Inn, and a grand Gilded Age mansion called Grey Towers, for which I will be forever grateful.

Thistledown at Seger House- Ligonier, PA
Thistledown at Seger House has been on quite a crazy ride over the past century. Considering its past incarnations, it's a absolute miracle it emerged with so many architectural elements intact. These elements are what elevate the property, and ultimately save it from mediocrity.

Greystone (Arms Family Museum)- Youngstown, OH
Completed in 1905, Greystone is one of the finest examples of Arts and Crafts architecture in the United States. Largely designed by owner Olive Freeman Arms, the home contains exquisite examples of light fixtures, stained glass, wrought iron and period furniture. The quality here is absolutely magnificent, embodying the early twentieth century movement perfectly.

Maymont Gardens- Richmond, VA
Maymont’s grand gardens are a gift straight from the Gilded Age. Elaborate and elegant, they perfectly exemplify the excess of the era. Featuring several different design styles, a stroll through the grounds will take you around the world.

Fonthill Castle- Doylestown, PA
Fonthill Castle is an absolute work of genius. Eccentric, mad genius, unlike anything else, except Henry Mercer’s other properties. Built between 1908 and 1912 entirely of hand mixed concrete, by Mercer himself, it is an Escheresque masterpiece.
