    Mayflower Inn- Washington, CT

After staying at the Mayflower Inn, I became obsessed with Auberge resorts. Everything at the Mayflower was so intentional, so design forward, and so focused on the experience. Indeed, Auberge properties are all about sense of place, and local experiences.

The Glass House- New Canaan, CT

Located less than an hour from the extravagant Rockefeller and Gould estates is a completely different yet equally interesting property. Standing in stark contrast to the egregious excess of the Gilded Age, Philip Johnson’s modern masterpiece The Glass House is magnificently minimalistic. At just 1815 square feet, it absolutely proves less can be more. Built in 1949 by eccentric modern/postmodern architect Philip Johnson, the glass and steel structure seems to disappear into the landscape, like a Special Ops agent. The original 1892 cathedral was a very traditional, twin tower Gothic affair, constructed by P.C. Keeley. It served the community until 1956, when a fire within the walls of the sanctuary quickly spread, leaving only the massive exterior brownstone blocks standing. Determined to be beyond salvage, the site was cleared. Quickly a drive for funds was launched, and the renowned New York architectural firm…

    Mark Twain House- Hartford, CT

I love Mark Twain. Or rather, I suppose I love Samuel Clemens, because I find the man more interesting than his books. Certainly someone who didn’t keep his opinions to himself, he is known for his biting wit, and being a bit of a curmudgeon. Which are definitely qualities I appreciate. He is also known for his extensive travels, which include everywhere. Really. He is an interesting character all around, who built an equally interesting house in Hartford, Connecticut. By the time the grand Victorian Gothic mansion was constructed in 1874, Clemens had already lived a full and exciting life. Born into a struggling Missouri family, he was forced to…
