St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica- Toronto, ON

Designed by Canadian architect William Thomas, the stunning Gothic Revival St. Michael’s Cathedral opened its massive doors in 1848, after 3 intensive years of construction.

Largely funded by Irish immigrants, the cathedral features pointed arches, buttressed walls, stone molding and iron accents. Two stone arcades run the length of the church, defining the worship space, while above an exposed beam ceiling and sixteen cast iron lanterns provide an ethereal airiness to the soaring space.

Several of the cathedral’s stunning stained glass windows, including the piece above the altar, were created by French artist Etienne Thevenot, a pioneer of medieval glass revival, known for his work at Notre-Dame in Paris. The result, a church flooded in deep hued jewel tones, adding to the calm vibe of the silent sanctuary.
