Savage River Lodge – Frostburg, MD
Savage River Lodges offers the opportunity to unplug and enjoy nature, while still retaining the creature comforts most of us don’t want to live without. The main lodge even includes a proper bar and dining room, a welcome amenity after a day spent exploring the adjacent Savage River State Forest.
Dating to 1999, the original property consisted of a lofty main lodge and 18 cabins; in 2014 8 glamping yurts were added to the compound. If available, I would definitely suggest a yurt, as they include a king size bed, radiant floor heating, domed skylight and gas fireplace. They also don’t allow pets, making them a better option for those allergic to dander. They usually are the first booked, so you will need to plan ahead for this option, or luck into a cancellation.
That said, the cabins, made of white pine and interlocking timbers with chinking, are undeniably cozy. While I wouldn’t exactly call them rustic, they are carpeted, which is an even bigger sin. Regardless, the compact cabins with sleeping loft and gas fireplace work well for a weekend, and are very reasonable. Some spots have more privacy than others, but all are an easy walk to the main lodge where a wood burning fireplace and tasty beverages greet guests.
