Portland Head Light- Cape Elizabeth, ME

Located just up the coast from Cape Elizabeth Light is the oldest lighthouse in Maine, Portland Head. So old, it was built at the request of George Washington, while Maine was still a part of Massachusetts.

Completed in 1791, the rubble stone lighthouse was constructed of local material, by Jonathan Bryant and John Nichols, masons from Portland. The current quaint keepers’ house, originally a duplex which housed two families, dates to 1891. Edward Hopper captured the complex in 1927, in a painting that still hangs in Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. Ridiculously scenic, expect a crowd even in the off season.
