Old Capitol Inn- Jackson, MS
Just like Johnny and June Carter Cash, I went to Jackson. I imagine the town is much quieter these days, as there was no dancing on Pony Kegs when I was there. There was however a wonderful, “historic” hotel just steps away from the Old Capitol, in the middle of downtown Jackson.
So, having been built in 1952, I am not sure this hotel technically qualifies as historic, but it is a wonderful example of repurposing, so I am including it. The Old Capitol Inn started life as a YWCA, renting rooms to young women who moved to Jackson from small rural communities to find work. Originally the building also contained a basketball court, as well as an Olympic sized pool, which was the first integrated pool in Mississippi, which lends credence to my historic designation.
The YWCA eventually moved out of the building, as boarding houses largely disappeared from the United States. A few other tenants occupied the space over the years, but by the time it was purchased for conversion to a hotel in 1996, it had been long vacant. Jackson, Mississippi is a city of many vacant buildings, so this is not at all surprising.
What is surprising is how charming and comfortable the owners have made the Old Capitol Inn. The rooms have wonderful character, with wood floors and Juliette balconies that allow you to look out onto North State Street. At least ours did; they also have rooms with courtyard views. There is a magnificent rooftop bar and garden, which had a band on the night we were there. In the morning, there was breakfast in the courtyard, which has a Koi pond and fountain. Not a bad place to start the day at all.
The location of the Inn is perfect for exploring Jackson. There are several historic buildings in the vicinity, including the Old Capitol Building, for which this property takes its name. The Governor’s mansion is a short walk away, as are many of the classic Jackson businesses that appeared in The Help. There is also a gated, guarded parking lot, so your car will rest as safely and soundly as you.
