Ohiopyle is an incredibly charming little town in the Laurel Highlands, with a horrible name. Impossibly scenic, the town itself sits at a horseshoe bend of the Youghiogheny River, and is overflowing with hikers, bikers, kayakers and white water rafters in the summer.
The historic Great Allegheny Passage rail trail passes right through town, with a restored truss bridge crossing the river, offering fabulous views of the activity below. A visitor’s center offers background regarding the area’s geology and native inhabitants, as well as a fabulous view of the waterfall from downstream. The town itself is tiny, but a handful of historic houses, churches and commercial buildings remain intact.
