While I usually avoid chain hotels, Marriott’s Hacienda Belen is located very close to San Jose’s Juan Santamaría International airport, making it an incredibly convenient place to stay before or after a flight. They even provide an airport shuttle, making it an ideal place to start or end a Costa Rica vacation.
Constructed in 1996 in the style of an 18th century Spanish hacienda, with lush landscaping and original artwork, it reads more resort than airport hotel. With two pools, several restaurants and a driving range, it’s the perfect place to relax after a long travel day. While the rooms are fairly basic, the common areas are inviting and well designed.
For the best experience, book a mountain view balcony room with concierge lounge access- even if you are arriving after dark. The impressive breakfast is well worth the nominal difference in room pricing, as is the sweeping vista.
