Hillsborough Winery & Brewery- Hillsboro, VA
To be honest, I didn’t like any of the wines I sampled at Hillsborough. That said, I would absolutely return to try their craft beer, because it’s a beautiful property, inside and out.
Situated on land once owned by George William Fairfax, a close friend of George Washington, Hillsborough’s quaint tasting room is located in a stunning 19th century stone barn. Outside, the large flagstone patio overlooks miles of rolling hills, grape vines, and wildflowers.
There were no crowds the day I was there (although there are several areas designated for large groups), and no loud music- just sunshine and scenery. That usually isn’t enough for me, but I will make an exception, just this once.
Vines here date to 2001, making it one of the older wineries in the region. It has all your standard Virginia grape varietals (Petit Verdot, Petit Menseng, Cabernet Sauvignon) planted over twelve acres, split into three fields. All of their wines are Estate Grown, and produced on site, aged in French Oak, Acacia Wood and stainless steel barrels depending on the varietal.
With a relaxed vibe and lovely landscaping, its definitely worth a visit when in the area.
