Fonthill Castle is an absolute work of genius. Eccentric, mad genius, unlike anything else, except Henry Mercer’s other properties. Built between 1908 and 1912 entirely of hand mixed concrete, by Mercer himself, it is an Escheresque masterpiece.
Dreamy and surreal, and at times Shakespearean, you could spend all day wandering the 44 rooms. Unfortunately you will only have an hour. A keen eye will be rewarded here, as the house is filled with tile treasures, and esoteric references. Although ridiculously photogenic, a visit is the only way to truly experience Mercer’s vision.
