Florida Southern College (Frank Lloyd Wright)- Lakeland, FL
/
As unlikely as it seems, a small private college located in Lakeland, Florida is home to the largest single site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world. Built between 1938 and 1958, Wright’s 13 campus buildings and associated walkways and terraces perfectly capture his design aesthetic and ideals. An absolute Disney World for design enthusiasts.
Mostly low slung and linear, a walk through the lush campus is a stroll through Wright’s mind. Although time and harsh weather has created condition problems for the structures, the designs still work aesthetically, emanating a fantastic mid-century utopian vibe.
In addition to the original buildings, an Usonian has recently been constructed on site, using Wright’s 1939 plans, part of his unrealized faculty housing neighborhood. Beautifully built, it could easily be confused with any of the Usonians built during Wright’s lifetime.
Although somewhat remote, it is worth the detour to explore the campus. Several different tours are available, as well as a Wright inspired visitor’s center.
