The first hotel at 172 Hurontario Street was a two story wooden structure called The Dominion, built around 1870. As wooden hotels are wont to do, it burned down in 1889. Unwilling to give up, the owner secured a $6000 mortage and built a three story brick building on the lot, fitted with every modern convenience of the time.
The new Dominion, opened in 1890, featured electric lights, running water and by some accounts the first elevator in Collingwood. The hotel operated under varioius owners until 1922, when it was converted to apartment units. In later years, the building would house an insurance agency on the first floor, as well as a furniture store.
By the early 1960s, the property was once again a hotel, called The Dorchester, which featured a popular first floor dining spot called The Bohemian Room. By the 1970s, the building was once again an apartment house, which lasted until new owners purchased the property in 2021.
Following an 18 month restoration, the new Hotel Dorchestor reopened as a 30 room boutique hotel in 2023. A fabulous mix of original details and updated design, the rooms are comfortable, and the common areas inviting. In 2024, the Tremont Cafe relocated to the propery, bringing cocktails and dining back to the first floor.
