Cleveland is a city full of surprises. Known for its industrial past, I was shocked to find so many historic greenspaces scattered throughout the city. Among the most magnificent are the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, a group of 33 distinct spaces, commemorating the many ethnic groups found in the city.
Set within 276 wooded acres along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, the earliest garden dates to 1916, with new additions added over the subsequent decades. While the older gardens tend to be more elaborate, several of which were WPA projects, they are all a welcome retreat from the chaotic city center, located just blocks away.
