As a lover of architecture and interior design, I was very excited to learn that a family wedding would put me in Brooklyn at the same time as the Brooklyn Heights Association’s biennial Designer Showhouse. Going in with high expectations, it did not disappoint.
Set in a glorious six story 1839 Greek Revival town house, originally built by George S. Howland (aptly the founder of paint pigment makers Brooklyn White Lead Company), the showhouse featured updated designs that maintained a traditional vibe. Striking a balance, unique property features were highlighted, never overwhelmed.
Although overall stunning, the use of high gloss lacquer paint on ceilings, and the stunning solarium were the property’s standout features. For those who often wander residential city streets, appreciating the ambient architecture while wondering about interiors, the Designer showhouse provides an excellent opportunity to see an idealized version of what lies beyond those massive doors.
