Spanning the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn is one of the most iconic bridges ever built. After the Golden Gate, it is arguably the most recognizable bridge in the world. Walking its majestic neo-Gothic span is something everyone should do at least once.
Designed by John Augustus Roebling, the bridge opened for traffic on May 24, 1883. At that time, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world (1595.5 feet), a true modern marvel of the Gilded Age. While it may not longer have that distinction, it is still impressive, and merits a visit while in NYC.
