Bow Valley Parkway & Johnston Canyon- Banff NP, AB

Although there are faster ways to get from Banff to Lake Louise than the Bow Valley Parkway, its not always about the destination. This short scenic drive offers excellent wildlife spotting opportunities, views of the surrounding mountains, and access to the Johnston Canyon trailhead, one of the most popular hikes in the park. In fact, you may never even make it to Lake Louise.

Although there are several stops along the parkway, the 8000 year old Johnston Canyon is perhaps the most popular. Here, a cantilevered trail winds through a lush limestone canyon, past several stunning waterfalls. An extension of the trail ascends to a serene alpine meadow studded with several bubbling mineral springs, known as Inkpots. As the lower trail is very popular, and not particularly difficult, aim to arrive early to beat the crowds.

Closer to Lake Louise, another popular parkway stop is Morant’s Curve, named for photographer Nicholas Morant, whose iconic early images help promote the park. Timing is key to catch trains as they navigate the sinuous curve, on tracks just feet above the banks of the Bow River. On a clear day, a stop at the Castle Mountain overlook is also not to be missed.

Although the parkway is only 32 miles long, give yourself at least half a day if you plan on making any stops. While it will only take about an hour and a half to hike to the falls in Johnston Canyon, continuing to the Inkpots may take up to 4 hours roundtrip, depending on your fitness level. For the best wildlife watching, arrive at dawn, before the crowds descend.
