Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge- Cambridge, MD
/
If you have never seen a Bald Eagle in the wild, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is the place that can make it happen. Although the number varies depending on the time of year, the refuge hosts over 150 of the black and white birds, so the odds are most definitely in your favor- even if you never leave your car.
The sprawling sanctuary, established in 1933, is a stopover along the Atlantic Flyway, making it flush with all types of migratory birds- over 250 species to be more exact. These can be viewed on hiking trails, and from strategically placed viewing platforms- even from the comfort of your car along the fantastically scenic Wildlife Drive, which cuts through the heart of the sanctuary. In addition to eagles, expect other big birds like falcons and osprey, as well as egrets and herons. For those interested in birds, Blackwater is an absolute wonderland.
