Antrim 1844- Taneytown, MD

A country inn is the perfect place to escape from it all, and few are better than Taneytown’s Antrim 1844. Although just about an hour from Washington, D.C., Antrim’s lush gardens and secluded pool make you feel world’s away from the city. Coupled with their renowned restaurant and wine list, it’s the ideal summer weekend destination.

Mansion Staircase

Antrim’s stunning brick Greek Revival main mansion was constructed in 1844 by Major Andrew G. Ege, on land inherited by his wife. Boasting 22 inch thick walls, 14 foot ceilings, marble mantles carved by William Rinehart and a glass enclosed cupola, the 25 room mansion was by far the finest home in the area. The estate also included a large barn, ice house, carriage house, and a small office used by Major Ege.

Sitting Room

Major Ege remained at the estate until 1857, just a few years before the Civil War would engulf the surrounding area. Over the next century, the stately house changed hands several times, until it was purchased in 1988, and opened as a four room inn. Following the restoration of several estate outbuildings, the nascent inn quickly increased in size.

Ice House

Today, the inn is almost a small village, with accommodations scattered around the grounds. The main Mansion, with its stunning spiral staircase and stately sitting rooms, contains the inn’s public spaces, including it’s cozy lounge and restaurant. While there are still guest rooms in the main house, more private options also exist, including the Ice House, Carriage House, Barn, and Cottage, each with totally unique configurations.

Ice House

Set in the formal gardens, the Ice House is a charming choice, although its completely open floor plan may not be for everyone. Be warned, the room door opens directly to the tub.

That said, it’s an otherwise comfortable space, convenient to both the Mansion and the pool. Also of note, the welcome basket is particularly generous here, including chocolates, wine and bottled water.

Pool

Known for their food and beverage service, dinner at Antrim is not to be missed. With one of the largest wine cellars on the East Coast, you are guaranteed to find something that pairs well with the ever changing, multicourse menu. Breakfast here comes in phases. The first, consisting of baked goods and fruit, is delivered to your room mailbox early in the morning; the second is served in the Mansion, featuring cooked to order items.

Excellent all around, Antrim is an absolute dream.
